What to know
The town of Jackson is small, walkable and considerably more interesting than the antler arches suggest. The National Museum of Wildlife Art is genuinely excellent and sits on the hill north of town with a view across the elk refuge.
For eating, Persephone Bakery in the morning, Hatch or Bin22 for the evening, and Snake River Brewing if someone in your group wants a plain burger and a good beer. Book anything popular a week ahead in high season.
In winter, the horse-drawn sleigh rides onto the National Elk Refuge leave from the museum. Several thousand elk winter on the flats there, and being pulled quietly into the middle of them is the valley's most underrated hour.
