What to know
Yellowstone is a long day from the lodge, not a half day. The drive north follows the Snake River, climbs over the Continental Divide twice and reaches the south entrance in about an hour and forty minutes, then it is another forty to Old Faithful.
If you only have one day, we suggest leaving at six, going straight to the Upper Geyser Basin before the coaches arrive, then looping to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in the afternoon and coming home through Hayden Valley at dusk for the wildlife.
The south entrance is closed to cars from early November to mid-May. In winter, the way in is by snow coach from Flagg Ranch, which needs booking well ahead and makes for a spectacular, very long day.
